Long term care planning is a must for every Washington resident

Aging is something just about every Kent resident would love to avoid but, unfortunately, it is inevitable. One of the biggest stresses of aging is the fear of death. While thinking about one's death can be taxing, it is important to consider one's plan - particularly as it relates to long-term care planning - to avoid more stress down the road.

Studies have shown that over half of Americans have not completed long term care planning including a will, trust or health care directives. This can cause numerous problems down the road. For instance, if no will or trust is set up to protect one's assets, the government may be able to tax a larger portion of the estate than would be the case with appropriate planning.

Another major downside to not having a full estate plan, including a living will, is on the medical side. Unfortunate and often unexpected situations can arise that may lead to a person being unable to make decisions for themselves, whether a result of old-age or an accident that has left someone incapacitated. In order to ensure one's wishes are known and ultimately followed, it can be vital to memorialize the wishes in an advance directive. These important estate planning documents can help advise family members and doctors about what a person wants in regards to medical intervention and end-of-life wishes.

For Kent residents, constructing a living will does not have to be a difficult task and will not take a lifetime to complete. An effective long term care plan can be set up by a trusted local attorney. Periodic review can also help ensure one's wishes continue to be represented in the documents. While these estate planning tools cannot prevent aging, they certainly can take off a lot of stress knowing everything will be taken care of in the future.
