Why are people scared of estate planning?

Many Kent residents have taken the time to create their estate plan. They understand how important it is to plan for not only the transfer of their assets, but their health care, guardianships and property should they become incapacitated. But, many people are scared of estate planning and what it may mean.

There are several reasons why a person would not want to create an estate plan. One is that they're afraid of facing the fact that one day they will die. This is not a pleasant topic, so it is understandable that thinking about one's mortality is not something people rush into. Another reason why someone fears creating an estate plan is that they think they will have to give up control. Most people want to control their assets until they're no longer able to, which is an approach estate planning can help a person with.

Working with a lawyer can be another fear. The right lawyer will recognize those fears and communicate their ability to help and create an open and positive environment. The cost of creating this estate plan may also seem to be a burden, but estate planning is actually affordable. Some attorneys charge flat fees while others charge by the hour. Estate planning is a gift to the family and a well-designed plan is one of the best gifts you can give to your family. And, finally, family issues may be complicated and difficult to work through. If there is a divorce or children with special needs, or a myriad of other situations, it can be hard to face these issues. But, if the problem is avoided, it still won't go away. An estate planning attorney understands how hard these decisions can be and can provide many options to choose from.

Although people may have fears in creating an estate plan, they are important for many reasons. Creating an estate plan, although it may be hard, can offer a family peace of mind that their wishes will be followed.
