Planning for the care of your pets

Many families in the Kent area own a pet. Pets are valuable members of our families and we treat them as such. If a pet owner becomes incapacitated or dies before their pet, the pets can be left in limbo. Planning ahead for this situation can be important for estate administration.

No one really wants to think about what will happen when they die. It's not a pleasant topic of conversation. But, planning ahead for this occasion is important and can be reassuring for families that there is a plan in place. There are certain strategies a person can use to care for their pets in case something happens. A person can leave money to a trusted friend to ensure the pet is taken care of.

A person can also set up a pet trust that will hold money for the care of the pet. Someone will be assigned to take care of the pet and instructions will be given as to how the pet should be cared for. One more option would be for a person to leave money to a pet rescue organization. This works well for an organization to receive money for the care of the pet and any extra money can be used by the organization for their needs.

Estate planning, although it may seem morbid, is actually a wonderful gift to leave to those who are left behind. Estate planning is more than just wills and trusts. It also can include medical directives, guardianship choices and power of attorney designations, among many other issues. An attorney who practices in estate planning law may be able to help their clients determine what estate planning measures they need for their unique situation.
